“There is clear evidence to show that increasing the price reduces the consumption of unhealthy food, especially sugary drinks. Other countries that have introduced taxes on soft drinks have seen a drop in consumption, including Mexico, France and several US cities.

“The causes of obesity are multiple.  We therefore agree with the Health Select Committee and Public Health England that a comprehensive strategy including  multiple measures is urgently needed to create a healthier food environment for our children and families.

“The forthcoming soft drinks industry levy is one way we can do this quickly and effectively.  It is already encouraging companies to reduce the sugar hidden in soft drinks.”
